I’m going to stop drinking sodas, and for most, this wouldn’t seem very hard, but for me, a few diet cokes everyday help and truly refresh. It’s just that it’s getting to be a problem, I think one hot day last week, I drank 6 cans of diet cokes in one day. Stop the madness! That is completely unnecessary, but somehow it happened, and I think I just need to stop soda’s cold turkey. I love them for the caffiene, but do I really need them? Doubtful. I haven’t even mentioned how much we are spending on sodas every week at the store… at least $10-$13 dollars on diet coke every week for my dh and I to be supplied anytime we want to go to the fridge.
So, adios diet coke….. I’m really going to miss you. Hello water… please help me not to miss my dearly departed diet coke. ; [

I hear your pain and sympathize with everyone of my tastebuds.
But I think you’ll find life is better this side of the diet coke fence. Oh, mind you the occasional coke every-now-and-then isn’t all that bad and quite the reward, but overall I enjoy not drinking sodas. And my kidneys particularly like the water intake.
Now, I must admit to a coffee problem though. But I’m working on forcibly limiting myself. Really, I am.

whenever i’ve laid off of coke or caffeine i’ve had headaches. just a plug – there’s a tension headache formula of tylenol that’s got caffeine. gets me over that hump. and water’s great – just make sure you’re not swapping bottled diet coke for bottled water if you’re looking to save $$.

Rick has it correct, Monica: you can get headaches from sudden caffeine withdrawal because your brain develops additional ‘receptor sites’ for the caffeine molecules. You’ll need to taper off gradually or supplement with another form of caffeine.
MDs sometimes have trouble getting patients off Excedrin (used for migraines because of the caffeine in it) because they complain of headaches when they stop taking it.
Starbucks can work, but it’s serious $$$! Shelley went to a Mr. Coffee iced tea maker to ’stop the cans’, a one time purchase rather than something ongoing…

My husband has been trying to quit coffee forever–I was really riding him for a while, but finally I just told him to buy it himself (not a la carte at Starbucks) and use cash so I wouldn’t know how much he was spending. Of course it’s his health I’m more concerned about, and his desire to not be dependent upon anything (for energy or otherwise) besides God. I’ve kind of given up hope but your post encourages me that I should keep encouraging him.

Hi guys… I have definetly felt the impact of the cold turkey denial of my daily dose. Today I slipped and bought a 24 pack, but it was on sale for $4.99!!!! How could I pass it up? I have a stratigic plan though… hear me out. (:D) I’m thinking like you said Dan that I taper off slowly… I’m thinking one can a day limit until they are all gone, then finito! I’m planning to save my single daily dose for right about 3:30-4pm when the day is really hot & I’m in the need for that little dose of caffine. Luckily for me Hal, I only have one cup of coffee in the morning (if my dh makes it, if not, I usually pass it by), but I feel your pain!
So… that’s my plan. Luckily Rick, we have really tasty and cold mountain water out of my tap, so I will save b/c I won’t have to by bottled water : ) yay!
